Owner-Operator & Leased Fleets covers the independent truckers who own (or lease) their trucks and operate as independent contractors — a defining feature of U.S. trucking, where hundreds of thousands of owner-operators haul freight under their own authority or leased to carriers. It is the entrepreneurial, fragmented backbone of the industry.

Demand and economics follow the freight cycle directly, and owner-operators are acutely exposed — they boomed in 2021–22 (many bought trucks at peak prices) and were devastated in the 2023–24 recession (rates below operating costs, fuel and equipment costs high, mass exits and bankruptcies). It is the most fragmented part of trucking, with the freight cycle, fuel and equipment costs, and the contested independent-contractor classification (a major regulatory battleground) the defining dynamics.
